Policy Studies

Programme Overview

Policy Studies is a subdiscipline of political science that includes the contents of policy and the analysis of the process of policymaking. The aim is to produce skilled practitioners who can help address the needs of governance and development, especially in South Africa, but also in comparable societies. Graduates take on positions in the public service, NGOs, research institutes, and other development organisations, which are committed to meeting the challenges of managing change in society.

PROGRAMME DURATION:

Honours: 1 year full time

Masters: 1 year full time and 2 years part-time. PHD 4years full time and 5 years part-time

PROGRAMMES:

  • PHD Public Policy (HC) and PHD Policy and Development Studies (PMB)

Admission Criteria: Applicants who possess a credit-weighted average of 65 percent and above in any cognate Masters degree, will be considered for this programme. Applicants must submit a concept note with their application for consideration.

  • Full Research Public Policy (Howard College Only)

Admission Criteria: Applicants who possess a credit-weighted average of 65 percent and above in any cognate Honours degree, will be considered for the Full Research Masters programme.

  • Masters by Coursework Policy and Development Studies (Howard College and Pietermaritzburg Campuses)

The modules which comprise the coursework component of the Masters programme Policy and Development Studies are: 

  • Managing Public Policy (PODS 801)
  • Policy Monitoring and Evaluation (PODS 802)
  • Research Methodology (SOCY 800)
  • Civil Society and Public Policy (PODS 804)
  • Independent Research Dissertation

Admission Criteria: Applicants who possess a credit-weighted average of 60 percent and above in any cognate Honours degree, will be considered for the coursework programme.

  • Honours Policy and Development Studies (Howard College and Pietermaritzburg Campuses)

The modules which comprise the Honours programme Policy and Development Studies are:

  • Public Policy Analysis (PODS 701)
  • Governance in South Africa (PODS 702)
  • Research Methodology (SOCY 700)
  • Independent Research Project

Admission requirements: Applicants who possess a credit- weighted average of 60 percent and above in any cognate Bachelors degree, will be considered for this programme.
