Population Studies

Population Studies is a broad social science discipline concerned with the study of human population in relation to the factors associated with changes in their size, composition and distribution. The programme consists of a broad range of modules aimed at equipping students with an understanding of population processes, demographic analysis and policy formulation. In addition, students are introduced to independent research on a wide range of population topics. The courses offered, amongst others, include introduction to population studies, demographic methods, population & development, reproductive & sexual health, HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa, population & health, fertility & nuptiality, migration & urbanisation and poverty & policy and research methods.  Click here for more information 

Community Development Studies

Community Development is a multi-disciplinary research and teaching programme which focuses on the broad areas of social development and socio-economic reconstruction. The Programme’s research initiatives address key social, economic and political concerns – social justice, inequality and poverty, uneven or inadequate economic growth, maldistribution of resources and institutional failures. Economic History

Economic History and Development Studies Graduates with economic history specialisations and/or qualifications enter various sectors of the economy including, but not limited to: banking and other financial services, local and national government, business and management consultancy; accountancy, tax advisory work, insurance and trading, economic analysis and research; manufacturing and utility.
Such graduates will assume job titles as: Researcher; Research Analyst, Media Research Assistant; Development officer, Country Director; Accountant/Analyst; Operations Analyst; Tax Assistant; Assistant Manager; Financial Analyst ; Revenue Analyst ; Policy Adviser; Research Analyst; Research Officer ; Senior Associate; Investment Representative; Economist; Market Risk Analyst; Equity Analyst; Rating Specialist Researcher; Lecturer/Professor in social policy; economic history, development studies; etc.
Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the discipline are offered from Howard College (HC) in Durban. Economic history is offered as a major in the Bachelor of Social Science. Click here for more information
